Overview[]

Australias largest native freshwater fish, the Murray cod was once abundant throughout the Murray-Darling basin. Reaching up to 130cm long in ideal conditions, the fish remains a prime target for anglers.

Today, their numbers are down to approximately 10% of their peak pre-European settlement figures, due to over-fishing, and habitat destruction.

Catch and Release[]

Murray cod have very soft skin susceptible to damage from poor handling and subsequent infection, and due to their large upper size range, can become critically exhausted from long fights on low breaking strain lines.

If you are planning on targetting this species, please read the Catch and Release article by Simon Kaminskas, first.
