Stocking[]
Tony, an AKFF member, and President of the Australian Bass association mentions the following in relation to Clear Island Waters:
The ABA are the stocking group that have the permit to stock Clear Island Waters.
In approximately 2004, the ABA in conjunction with the DPI did an electro fish and gill net survey of the water ways.
From this data the DPI gave us a figure to which we could stock the water ways, that total came to 36,000 Bass fingerling per year.
For the last 4 years the ABA have for filled that quota but in 2009, we are only going to stock 20,000 Bass as the main money source comes from self funded and money raising ventures.
Clear Island Waters is classed as a small impoundment because of the lock and hence the Bass can NOT breed naturally; saying that I am sure maybe a few have but not the common event in this area.
Clear Island Waters is classed as tidal, since Mudgeeraba Creek runs into the waterway - and therefore it is classed as being a natural environment for Australian Bass. As such it is subject to closure between 1st of June and the 31st of August.
The water ways were stocked for all to enjoy and have seen many people do just that, I live 50m from the lakes and have been for 15 years and see all the Kayaks and canoes enjoying this area on a very regular basis. In short this is what the ABA started out to achieve and think we have done that.
Cheers Tony.
P.S. if anyone would like to become a member and contribute to the effort you are more than welcome.
