Burrum Heads is a small fishing town at the northern extremity of Hervey Bay. Situated on the southern shores of the mouth of the Burrum River, it offers kayak fishing opportunities that are second to none.
There are no hi-rise buildings here yet and the town caters more to the family oriented type holiday with calm, safe beaches that are ideal for the little ones.
Accommodation ranges from caravan parks to Motel, unit, and house rentals. The council caravan park is located right on the waters edge with its own small boat/kayak put in:

The little town boasts a hotel, bowls club, hardware, butcher, and bakers shop as well as a general store. Basic tackle requirments are catered for at the general store and hardware. Hire basic kayaks are also available at the hardware.
Fishing opportunities at Burrum Heads are only limited by the desires of the fisherman. In the warmer months, school mackeral are abundant at the mouth of the river. Bream and huge whiting are in the river all year and flathead are regularly taken from the beach right in front of the town.
Upstream from Burrum Heads, are a system of mangrove islands surrounded by immense sand and mud flats with an extensive system of shallow gutters running through (very suitable to a kayak). Yabbie banks are also prolific here and are the preferred bait of the locals.
The Burrum River system is fed by three other significant rivers, the Gregory, Isis, and Cherwell. Each river offers a very different paddling and fishing experience to the others. The Gregory is arguably the most scenic and is the only one within realistic paddling range from Burrum Heads. Huge grunter (javelin fish) are taken in numbers there every winter in addition to all of the usual sub-tropical and tropical species.
The upper reaches of the Burrum River also offer some very good opportunities especially when the weather turns unkind. I will post more on this a bit later.
